Standards. Simulations. Tools. Feedback. Higher Order Thinking. Instructional Integrity.

That’s a lot to expect from a math program, but that’s exactly what Odyssey Math delivers. To achieve in mathematics, students must understand basic math concepts and then build new knowledge and understanding from their past experience and knowledge. But not all students reach new understanding at the same time and in the same way.

So, the philosophy of CompassLearning Odyssey Math is to assist students from kindergarten through high school in learning fundamental skills and developing processes for inquiry and exploration; to provide a meaningful context for applying ideas, tools, and manipulatives; and to align all this to your state’s standards.

To accomplish this philosophical goal, a combination of direct instruction, guided feedback, and exploration allows students to develop understanding in-depth. Odyssey Math is grounded in the extensive knowledge base of mathematics research and features best practices for mathematics concept development and instruction which blend skill-building with a problem-based approach. That allows students to expand their knowledge and gradually increase their problem-solving skills.

And students who learn in different ways benefit from the components of the online activities that engage their senses and provide opportunities for reasoning, investigation/questioning, uncovering new ideas, communicating, problem solving, collaboration. Online tools provide practical application of newly developed skills and knowledge.

To extend the learning away from the computer, students have access to offline resources to enhance reasoning skills and develop communication skills as they write, draw, and talk about mathematics. These resources allow students to reflect, enhance, and transfer knowledge.

Add it all up and you have effective learning that enables students to connect more easily with math concepts and procedures. Students develop the skills needed to carry out procedures flexibly, accurately, efficiently and appropri¬ately; develop an understanding of mathematics and problem solving skills; and see mathematics as sensible, useful and worthwhile.
